Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
