The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
