Conservative responses to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no new data.
