Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
